Does hydrojetting damage older clay or cast iron pipes?

Not when done correctly. A licensed plumber will run a camera inspection first to check for cracks, collapse, or severe deterioration. If the pipe is structurally sound, pressure is adjusted to match the material — typically 2,000–3,000 PSI for older clay versus 4,000 PSI for modern PVC. Pipes that are already failing need repair, not jetting.

How much does hydrojetting a sewer line cost in Troy, MI?

Bison Plumbing charges a flat $1,150 for residential hydrojetting in Troy. Camera inspection is typically $135–$165 but is often bundled with the jetting service.

How long do hydrojetting results last?

Results typically last 1 to 3 years depending on tree root proximity, pipe material, and household drain habits. Homes with known root intrusion issues may benefit from annual or biannual maintenance jetting to prevent blockages from returning.

Is hydrojetting better than snaking for tree roots?

Yes. A drain snake can cut through larger roots but leaves fine root hairs attached to the pipe wall, which regrow quickly. Hydrojetting strips roots from the pipe surface entirely and flushes them out, slowing regrowth significantly. For Troy homes near mature trees, hydrojetting is the preferred method for root-related blockages.

Do I need a camera inspection before hydrojetting?

Absolutely. A camera inspection identifies the type of blockage, confirms your pipe is structurally sound enough for high-pressure cleaning, and helps the plumber choose the right nozzle and pressure setting. Any company that offers to hydrojet without inspecting first is skipping a critical safety step.

Can hydrojetting fix a slow drain?

It depends on the cause. If the slow drain is caused by buildup such as grease, scale, or partial root intrusion, hydrojetting is extremely effective. If it is caused by a bellied pipe, broken section, or improper slope, jetting will provide temporary relief but the underlying structural issue needs repair.

How long does a hydrojetting appointment take?

Most residential hydrojetting jobs in Troy take 45 minutes to 90 minutes, including setup and post-jetting camera verification. Severe blockages or longer sewer laterals may take up to 2 hours. The technician will give you a time estimate after the initial camera inspection.

Can I hydrojet my sewer line myself?

Residential hydrojetting is not a DIY project. The equipment operates at 3,000–4,000 PSI — powerful enough to cut through tree roots and grease, but also powerful enough to cause injury or pipe damage if mishandled. Professional plumbers carry the training, insurance, and camera equipment needed to do the job safely and verify results.

Is hydrojetting environmentally friendly?

Yes. Hydrojetting uses only water — no chemical drain cleaners, no caustic solutions, and no additives. The EPA encourages eco-friendly plumbing practices, and hydrojetting aligns with those guidelines by eliminating the need for harsh chemicals that can damage pipes and enter the water table.
