Replace or Fix Your Faucet?

Aside from a major water leak, most of the common faucet problems can be pretty easy to ignore. That doesn’t mean you have to, though. If you’re tired of dealing with a common faucet problem, you may be wondering if you can just repair the faucet, or if you might as well buy a whole new one. That depends on what the problem is.

Faucet problems that only need a repair

Faucets are built to last, so many issues can be solved with a quick repair rather than shopping for a replacement.

  • Loose faucet handle – If your faucet handle is loose, it can be more than just annoying to use. In some cases, a loose handle can make it impossible to fully shut off water, slowly wasting money in drips. A loose handle can be quickly fixed by tightening the interior component that holds the handle in place.
  • Too tight of a handle, squeaky handle – The opposite of the loose handle, a handle that is too tight can also be annoying to use. Even more annoying is a handle that squeaks whenever it’s moved. You can fix a tight handle by loosening the interior component that holds the handle, and you can stop the squeaking by greasing those interior components.
  • Leaky or dripping faucet – This is the worst of the easily repairable faucet problems. A leaking faucet can add hundreds of dollars to your water bill over the course of a year. If the leak is more than just a slow dripping, it could even cause water damage and mold. Fix a leaky faucet by tightening the adjusting ring, which is done differently depending on the kind of faucet you have.

Faucet problems where you should consider replacement

Eventually, you’re going to have to replace that old faucet. If any of these things are happening, it’s time to get a new one.

  • Inefficient water usage – If you have an older faucet, it’s likely to use too much water. Some older faucets use as much as 5 gallons of water per minute, which will show up on your water bill. Replacing it with a newer faucet can cut that water usage in half.
  • Repairs needed often – While it’s smart not to throw away a faucet at the first sign of trouble, over time repairing it may not be worth it anymore. If you find your faucet needing repairs often, you might as well cut your losses and buy a new one that won’t need so much upkeep.
  • Old faucet – A good faucet can last you up to 20 years. If you’ve had yours for that long, it could be time for a new one. Whether it’s due to the water efficiency, repairs needed, or you just want to change up the style, you’ve gotten your money’s worth out of the old one.
