Understand your Home Plumbing Systems

Home Plumbing Systems

If you’re a homeowner, you should understand at least the basics of your plumbing systems so that you can know when something is wrong and what part is causing the issue. If you’re building or remodeling a home, understanding home plumbing systems is necessary to do a good, safe job.

If you’re stuck with a plumbing system that isn’t working, you’ll feel the effects quickly. To be sure that you can figure out what’s wrong and get it fixed as soon as possible, we’re going to give you an overview of the different plumbing systems in your home.

Drain-Waste-Vent (DWV) Plumbing System

Your DWV plumbing system is equally important as your water supply, or else you would have to get rid of waste and wastewater on your own. Your DWV system carries the wastewater from each drain and fixture in your home to the sewer system or your septic tank. The DWV system issue most homeowners frequently experience is a clogged drain.

One part of the DWV system, the venting part, is something that most homeowners don’t think about. The venting portion of your DWV system is responsible for clearing sewage gases that would otherwise stink up your home.

Water Supply Plumbing System

The water supply system is what connects your home’s toilets, showers, and tubs, and sinks to the city’s water supply. This system is composed of pipes, fittings, faucets, and service valves. The pipes are usually plastic, galvanized iron, or copper, and they range in diameter from ½” to 4”.

Bathroom Plumbing System

A working bathroom plumbing system is essential to a clean and comfortable home.

Your bathroom sink, shower, toilet, and tub are supplied water by hot and cold lines. These lines come from the city’s water supply. Once they reach your home, the water that’s going to come out hot goes through the water heater, while the cold water goes straight to your fixtures.

The waste and wastewater from your bathroom are processed by your DWV system. This system not only takes the waste to the sewer or your septic tank, but it also helps with water pressure. The venting pipes carry your sewage gases up and out through the roof of your home while maintaining pressure to keep up your water pressure.

Kitchen Plumbing System

One of the simplest systems in your home is the kitchen plumbing system. Usually, the kitchen is made up of only a few pipelines. The sink is connected to hot and cold water lines, and its drain is hooked up to a waste line that feeds into the DWV system. Gas stoves are hooked up to a gas line. Any appliances that use water tend to be hooked up to the same cold water line as the sink.
